The free version of DisplayFusion makes it easy to customize your desktop wallpaper with your own images. Select pictures from your own hard drive or pull them down from Flickr with this freebie. You can search for and preview shots from Flickr from within the program, and there are nice options for those with multiple monitors.
The straightforward progam window displays your monitor(s) in the top section, and you can click each one in turn to select an image for that monitor, or choose to have the background span both monitors. You can browse your own hard drive for pictures, but it's a good deal more fun to click the "Load from Flickr" button.
Doing so brings up another window where you can search for images based on keywords, particular Flickr Groups or a specific person. You can hunt for a person's shared images based on their name, or (a better bet) their e-mail address. Click any of the resulting thumbnail previews to select it as a background.

Windows Live Photo Gallery offers a nice array of consumer-level tools for photo organizing, editing, and sharing.
On startup, your photos display in Windows Live Photo Gallery's Organizer. With the click of a button, you can sort them by Date, Rating, Person, Geotag, Tag, Name, Folder, or Published. Adding Tags, Names, and Ratings couldn't be easier. Simply open the Tag and Caption pane, then select the photo or group of photos and type in the relevant information into the appropriate field for that tag or select it from a list. To rate a picture(s), click on a star (1 to 5). As you identify photos as containing a certain person, Photo Gallery learns that person's face, and will attempt to recognize it in future pictures. We found the program's face recognition engine works rather well and learns very quickly. For instance, after we identified actor Eli Wallach in only two pictures, Photo Gallery offered his name in the People tag field for every other photo we had of him. Importing photos from a camera, memory card, or other external source is similarly simple.
Windows Live Photo Gallery is intuitive, with a very easy learning curve--which is good, since the Help is not organized conveniently. For consumers who enjoy using their photos, it can be a very useful--even valuable--program for easy, comprehensive photo organizing, and for basic editing and sharing.

The real multi-monitor support in Windows has task-bar only in the primary monitor that shows applications from all monitors. The extended monitors are plain without any taskbar. There is no other way to add another taskbar to the extended monitor. All windows are displayed on the primary monitors taskbar regardless on which monitor they are opened. We created MultiMon taskbar to solve this issue in our office. It creates a second (and third) taskbar which will be put on extended monitors. Each taskbar display items from that monitor only.
The PRO version has additional features such as resizing windows to multiple monitors, moving to monitors, suspending the extended taskbars when the computer is connected via Remote Desktop and themed captions.

KeePass is a free, open source, light-weight and easy-to-use password manager.
KeePass solves an increasingly important dilemma: How to keep track of all of your passwords, whether they be for email services, Web sites, bank accounts, or what have you. Increasingly, we are inundated with passwords, with no easy way to keep track of them. KeePass does the job neatly.
When you first run KeePass, you create a new database where you store your passwords, and enter a master password. Only someone with that master password can get into the program to see the passwords. One nice touch is that as you type the master password, it shows you the relative strength (and therefore safety) of the password. You can also set other options as well, such as using GZip compression to keep down the size of the database.
Keeping track of your passwords is also easy. When you create a new KeePass entry, type in a title, your user name if any (such as for a Web-based mail account), the passwords, a URL, and any notes. If you'd like, you can have the program generate a random password for you, and you have plenty of different options for choosing the password strength, and how to generate it. Techies will revel in the features; everyone else will just ask the program to generate a secure, random password.
You can also store your passwords in different categories. By default, KeePass provides categories for General, Windows, Network, Internet, eMail, and Homebanking. But you can easily add your own, or delete existing ones.
KeePass is useful for those who want a simple password-protection program, but also those who want to automate the input of passwords. Automating password input is not for the faint of heart and is quite difficult to do. Most people won't find it worth their while. But if you're technically inclined and like to fiddle and troubleshoot, and don't mind not getting any help, you may want to give it a try.
Overall, KeePass is a very useful program for anyone who has plenty of passwords to track, and it doesn't hurt that it's free, either.

My family has a dangerous habit of blindly clicking through software installs and downloading all kinds of junk from the Internet. Luckily for them, I can repair the damage anytime from my home or office using the free UltraVNC remote control software.
You can install and use UltraVNC in several different ways; in my experience, it's easiest for the person I'm helping if I run the remote viewer on my machine, and then send a simple applet to them via an e-mail attachment that they click to automate the link to my system.
To set up UltraVNC on your PC, install the application and select Run UltraVNC Viewer (Listen Mode) on the program's Start menu. If you have a router, you may have to open a port (the UltraVNC's default is 5500) to redirect traffic to your local computer. The method for doing this varies from router to router, so check your device's documentation or the vendor Web site.

It happens to all of us. You have a DVD or a video file that you really like--maybe even paid good money to get--but the format restricts the ways you can use it. If you want to turn into a friendly format so that you can store it on your hard disk, make a backup to disc, or play on a mobile device, you'll want HandBrake.
HandBrake grabs video from a variety of sources, including a DVD, and a DVD image, and grabs audio from sources as well, including MPEG audio tracks. You'll then be able to output a digital file in a variety of formats, including AAC, MKV, MP4, and MPEG-4.
There are some very nice extras in HandBrake, such as being able to select individual DVD chapters and grab subtitles. You get plenty of control over your recording, including selecting the bit rate, maximum file size for video, and bit rate and sample rate for audio.
Note HandBrake isn't necessarily the easiest program to use. It has a large number of options available, and there's no good explanation of what they do or how to use them. Beginners should stick with the defaults, although advanced users will be pleased at the number of options.
This newest version of HandBrake makes a number of improvements over previous versions, including variable rate encoding, MP4 optimization, better handling of DVD errors, and a redone interface. On the less positive side, support for AVI and OGG/OGM has been dropped.
In short, if you're looking for a free video transcoder, HandBrake is a solid choice.

Having too many windows open can seriously impede multitasking. Trying to find the right window, whether through the taskbar or through Alt-Tabbing , becomes an awkward juggling act. Minime lets you easily hide windows which you don't want cluttering up your screen.
Using a customizable hotkey, Minime minimizes programs to the system tray. There's also a handy hotkey for restoring everything you've hidden. Minime groups all minimized programs together in one tray icon, unlike RBTray, which creates a separate icon for each. Right clicking the icon brings up a list of the minimized programs (along with a link to Minime's settings), each of which can be selected for easy restoration. This is very nice improvement, because a cluttered tray can cause headaches too. And whereas RBTray doesn't work on some non-standard windows, such as iTunes, Minime handled everything I threw at it.
Having programs grouped in the tray may seem odd at first, but it's not hard to get used to it. And once you do, you'll probably realize that there are a lot of programs that never belonged in your way in the first place. Minime is a small utility, but can still dramatically improve your productivity.
